A comedy caper about a recently released gangster, Lingaa stars Rajinikanth as the titular character. It depicts Lingaa’s mission to take revenge on a politician who deliberately incarcerated him for a crime he did not commit, and the twists and turns that he faces before finally reaching his intended target. Innocent lives are taken by the corrupt politicians in order to achieve their goals, but they forget how karma can come back to haunt them someday. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal plays the role of Bittu Aayi who will assist in freeing Lingaa from jail with his wit and intelligence. Shivaji Raja has composed the music for this film and the songs are expected to be big hits.The teaser was released on 18 November 2014 and got huge responses. The trailer was released on 2 February 2015 and received mixed to positive reviews from critics and fans alike. Behindwoods gave 3/5 stating that "Linga set out with a strong premise but it seems like its deviated by now". Indiaglitz commented that it is an action entertainer and will appeal to those looking forward to Rajinikanth's signature style of films. Another critic mentioned that the trailer gave a clear view of the film and you can't wait for its release. The film opened to positive reviews on 13 March 2015. Ashish Vidyarthi of Oneindia rated it 5/5 stating that the film is "a must see in theaters" and "Rajinikanth gives his usual touches to Lingaa". The Times of India, India's largest English daily, gave 3/5 saying "Rajni is back after two years; this time in his original avatar; but I’m not sure how much he is willing to let go of his stardom.". Film Critics rated it 3/5 and said that Rajinikanth's Lingaa is a technically accomplished film with a solid script and a gripping screenplay. Deccan Chronicle gave 3.25/5 stating that the film's initial narration is interesting from the word go, but the tempo of the movie slows down in between. Lingaa failed to impress fans and critics. It was declared as a flop by trade experts after 2 weeks of its release, one reason being Rajinikanth playing double roles in his films since Sivaji (2007). It got mixed reviews from critics, but also got huge negative response from fans for having no story and too many double roles played by Rajinikanth. The "Ananda Vikatan" review said, "probably Rajinikanth's worst movie till date.". The "Behindwoods" review said, "At the end of the day, Lingaa leaves you with a feeling of disappointment.". The "Times of India" review said, ""Lingaa", despite its great production values and technical competence, has nothing to say or do.".
